Cowboys BREAKING: Coach Brian Schottenheimer – ‘McCarthy Guy’ Hired as Coordinator

As expected, the Dallas Cowboys are hiring Brian Schottenheimer for the job as offensive coordinator on head coach Mike McCarthy’s staff.

FRISCO – Mike McCarthy is going back to the future with his Dallas Cowboys offense … and with his hire of a new offensive coordinator.

As expected, the Cowboys are hiring Brian Schottenheimer, promoting him in-house from his 2022 job as a special assistant on McCarthy’s staff, to replace the departed Kellen Moore.

Key to this: It’s a continuation of the long relationship between McCarthy and the Schottenheimer family.

“I am very happy to have Brian take on this key role with our team. He has been an important part of our staff already and has a great grasp of where we are and where we want to go,” said McCarthy. “Brian also has an exceptionally strong foundation, history and relationships beyond his time here that translate very well into understanding what our approach to operating and executing will be for the future.”

Schottenheimer, 49, will serve in a role that gives him the coordinator title, even though as CowboysSI.com has reported, McCarthy in many ways will serve as his own coordinator, and play-caller, with Schottenheimer working as his right hand.

Schottenheimer is in a sense “family,” as McCarthy’s first NFL job came in 1993, when after serving as the receivers coach at the University of Pittsburgh, he got his first NFL job, with the Kansas City Chiefs. … Hired by an all-time McCarthy mentor … the late Chiefs head coach Marty Schottenheimer. … who was also a Pittsburgh guy.

“I am thrilled and thankful for this exciting opportunity and embrace the high standards and expectations that come with this role and the Dallas Cowboys organization,” said Schottenheimer. “Having long-standing, great respect and appreciation for Mike McCarthy as a person, a leader and a head coach makes this a very rewarding and compelling moment for me.”

Brian Schottenheimer, is a former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator, who in 2021 worked with the Jacksonville Jaguars as their passing game coordinator.

Schottenheimer’s NFL experience extends back to 1997. He spent the last three seasons with the Seahawks as the coordinator, a title he had previously held with the New York Jets and the Rams.

There is not much of an argument against Schottenheimer’s NFL credentials, and his role in Dallas will be a rather subtle one … though he can certainly raise his profile if as McCarthy introduces his West Coast Offense style from Green Bay into The Star, he can help QB Dak Prescott reach another level.

Schottenheimer replaces Kellen Moore, who was bumped out on his way to the Chargers, as in the end, Moore, in terms of philosophy, wasn’t a “McCarthy Guy.” .. meaning that it helps the new guy to be part of the boss’ coaching tree.

Said McCarthy: “This will be an exciting and efficient transition for us that I am confident will help yield the growth and results we all want and expect.”
