Cowboys NFL Draft Plan: Trade Up for Longhorns RB Bijan Robinson? RG3 Thoughts

With one Texas football star already in tow in Brandin Cooks, Robert Griffin III is encouraging the Dallas Cowboys to keep things homegrown in the form of Bijan Robinson.
America’s Team is slowly living up to its Texas namesake. As they look to bolster the receiving corps for quarterback Dak Prescott, the Dallas Cowboys brought in via trade Brandin Cooks, a rare consistent silver lining for the Houston Texans, to serve as one of the top receivers.

Another Texas gridiron playmaker feels like they should take things a step beyond.

Robert Griffin III, well-lauded for his exploits at Baylor, briefly played the role of Cowboys general manager shortly after Cooks’ arrival was announced, calling on Dallas to select Texas running back Bijan Robinson. The Longhorn legend, Griffin hints, is the missing piece to the Cowboys’ intentions of becoming a major problem in the NFC’s playoff picture.

“Now all the Cowboys have to do is draft Bijan Robinson,” Griffin, an NFL veteran-turned-ESPN analyst, declared, posting a photo of Robinson.

Drafting Robinson could be a questionable move from a Dallas perspective, especially considering recent events around their current rushers: 2022 breakout star Tony Pollard is set to play on the franchise tag while the last rusher they took in the first round, Ezekiel Elliott, is on his way out.
But, to Griffin’s indirect point, Robinson could solve the Cowboys’ rushing issues both now and later considering the Pollard decision will have to be made all over again next offseason, one where a more firm – and expensive – commitment would have to be made.

An earner of 4,215 total yards and 41 scores over four seasons in Austin, Robinson has been lauded as one of the best pure prospects and athletes in the draft but teams have been reluctant to make big investments into running backs in recent years. No rushers heard their names announced in the first round of last year’s draft, with the New York Jets getting things rolling with Breece Hall in the 36th overall slot.

No matter what Dallas does with their first pick at 26th overall, the fact the club added a reliable receiver like Cooks certainly lowers the possibility of accepting aerial assistance early on and makes Robinson a more attractive option … provided he’s still there at 26 – or provided the Cowboys, which retained their premium picks while securing Cooks, opt to trade up to chase what might be a top-five talent in Bijan.
