Damar Hamlin’s recovery starts to lift dark cloud over Cowboys, NFL

Dallas players acknowledge that it will be difficult to move on from the episode completely.

FRISCO — Word came before the Cowboys took the practice field Thursday that Buffalo’s Damar Hamlin was dramatically better, that he was able to grab the hands of loved ones and was “neurologically intact.’’

The cloud that has hung over every team in the NFL since that frightening episode Monday night began to lift as the league prepares for the final week of the regular season.

“I mean I don’t know if it’s a turn the page that quick obviously,’’ quarterback Dak Prescott of the update. “Yeah, great news though.

“Obviously just hearing that he’s been writing. I saw this morning that he’s responsive and gripping hands and now taking a step to writing. I’m as happy as can be obviously. I think as everybody saw Monday night, right, the world went into a shock, right? And just now, a couple days later, we just say prayer is powerful. God is great.

It’s yeah, it’s awesome. It’s awesome.’’

Positive news, but the episode is fresh on everyone’s mind and it’s tough to move on completely. CeeDee Lamb’s grandmother called him the moment Hamlin collapsed on the field and has been calling him every day since.

Conversations at The Star continue.

“Everybody’s very engaged with it,’’ said head coach Mike McCarthy, who spoke of how uplifted everyone in the quarterback room got when the first positive update came over Thursday morning.

“When you have tragedy in these type of moments, it makes grown men talk. I mean, it makes us have conversations that you’re really not comfortable talking about. So I know from our personal experiences and football team we’ve had an opportunity to grow through this.

“But obviously the most important thing is Damar’s health and progress and that he gets back to where he needs to be with his family and his football team. I think the energy is definitely picked up today because of the good news that we’re hearing out of Cincinnati.’’
